What is fish veterinary care?

Yes — fish need veterinary care too. As true patients, fish can be examined, diagnosed, and treated for a range of diseases, just like any other pet in your family.

Our team can assess sick or struggling fish, run diagnostics to find the underlying cause, and recommend treatment to get your aquatic companions back to good health.

Caring for your fish

Common treatments

We diagnose and treat many of the conditions that affect pet fish, including “Ick” (white spot disease), fungal infections, and buoyancy problems such as swim bladder disease. Early treatment gives your fish the best chance at a full recovery.

Diagnostic tools

Many fish diseases are caused by parasites too small to see. We can perform skin scrapings and fin biopsies and examine the samples under a microscope to identify exactly what’s affecting your fish, so treatment can be precise.

Parasite identification

Identifying the specific parasite or pathogen matters — the wrong treatment can stress your fish further. Microscopic analysis lets us target the actual problem rather than guessing, improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary medication.

Water quality guidance

Most fish illness traces back to the environment. We can talk through water quality, filtration, and tank or pond conditions to help prevent disease before it starts — because healthy water means healthy fish.

Fish we see

We care for both outdoor pond fish and indoor aquarium fish, including:

Calm exotic pet during a Fear Free visit

A Fear Free approach for exotics

Exotic pets have completely different stress triggers than dogs and cats. Many are prey species for whom handling, noise, and new environments are genuinely frightening. We tailor our Fear Free techniques to each species, working calmly and patiently to keep your pet as relaxed as possible from the moment they arrive.

Transporting a fish to Paradise Animal Hospital

Fish need stable water temperature and oxygen for the ride to us:

  • Bag or container double-bagged with plenty of their own tank water
  • Insulate inside a cooler to buffer against the cold
  • Keep them dark and calm to limit stress
  • Bring a separate water sample if we’ve asked for one
